Beacon echoes architecture of "2001: A Space Odyssey”
The alien allure of OMA's hyper-tech skyscraper parallels the celestial monoliths in Stanley Kubrick's film "2001: A Space Odyssey," which spark humanity's transformation and the genesis of a space civilization. The pyramid-shaped tower would be equally transformative as a new Wonder of the World lighthouse on the southern seaport of Manhattan or as a temple to technology at the epicentre of the first Martian cosmopolis. (In a project that premiered at the Venice Biennale, OMA outlined a fantastical conceptual design for an ever-changing "Hospital of the Future", built by next-generation robots to protect the leading-edge Mars explorers (https://youtu.be/YlpYdLh0N58?feature=shared)).
